What causes your Volkswagen to overheat?
An overheating engine is not extremely common. However, it can happen in your Volkswagen. If your car is overheating, there is a problem. It could be caused by a number of issues. No matter what the problem is, do not drive with an overheating engine. Doing so can lead to more damage and possible complete engine failure.
- Cooling System Leak: A leak in the cooling system is the main reason for overheating engines in Volkswagens. When there is a leak your engine will not be able to cool properly.
- Water Pump has Failed: The water pump is responsible for pumping coolant through the cooling system. When the pump fails, you will experience overheating immediately.
- Blocked Hoses: The coolant hose can get blocked with dirt and debris. If there is not a leak and your water pump is working but your engine is still overheating, you might have a clogged hose.
- Radiator Fan: If the radiator fan is not working correctly, heat will not be able to escape.
- Low Motor Oil: The motor oil in your car is needed to lubricate parts and remove excess heat. If the oil is low, your Volkswagen can run hot.
- Car Thermostat: The thermostat regulates the amount of coolant that runs through the engine. If the thermostat is faulty or has failed, the engine will not receive the coolant needed to keep it cool.
Things You Can Do to Help Prevent Overheating
If your car is overheating, there are a few tips and tricks you can try to help keep it cool.
- Park in a Garage or the Shade: An overheating engine is more common during the summer. The sun’s powerful rays are constantly beating down on your Volkswagen. You are not the only one that is affected by the heat, your car is too.
- Turn the Heat On: This may sound like a crazy idea, but it can help cool the engine down. Turning the heat on will help to pull the hot air away from the engine.
- Turn Off The Air Conditioner: Running your air conditioner puts a strain on the engine. If your engine begins to overheat, pull over and turn the A/C off.
- Do Not Ride Your Brakes: When you use your brakes, heat is generated. Constantly using them can increase the temperature in your car.
- Flush the Radiator: The radiator needs to be flushed This will remove dirty coolant. Staying current on your Volkswagen’s service schedule will help to prevent overheating.
- Replace the Battery: As your battery ages, it is not able to provide the power it did when it was new. This lack of power will make your engine work harder.
Things to Do When Your Volkswagen Overheats
If your Volkswagen is overheating, do not continue driving. Instead, as soon as it is safe, pull off the side of the road and turn the engine off. Open the hood to allow the heat to escape and leave the engine to cool off for at least 10 minutes.
After leaving it cool down, turn the key to the first position. Do not start the car. Check the dashboard to see if the engine has cooled down and fluid levels are correct. Start the engine. If it continues to run hot or makes strange sounds, do not drive it. Call for help and have your Volkswagen towed to our auto repair shop.
