The importance of regular maintenance and proactive repairs cannot be over-emphasized. Routine maintenance keeps your vehicle in excellent condition and saves you from unexpected vehicle problems, and Smart Car is not an exception to this general rule. The compact car has been around in Europe since 1998 but was only introduced into the U.S market in 2008.
Although the car was a success in Europe, the reverse was the case in the United States, as it sold 25,000 units in its first year, but since then, sales have plummeted. Still, Smart Car owners can testify to the vehicle’s reliability, and with proper maintenance, the car should run well over 200,000 miles. Keep reading as we discuss the required maintenance depending on the miles traveled:
Oil change
Oil is crucial to the smooth running of every engine. It lubricates the moving parts and reduces friction, which could accelerate engine wear. The constant lubrication and exposure to heat, moisture, and air cause the oil to degrade and gather contaminants. Consequently, the old oil will need to be replaced for adequate lubrication of the engine. The recommended oil change for a Smart Car is after every 10,000 miles.
Filter replacement
Every vehicle contains the following filters: oil, fuel, and air. The oil filter eliminates contaminants and particles from the oil for the effective functioning of the oil. The oil filter should be replaced every second time you get an oil change.
Although the air filter can last between 15,000 to 30,000 miles, it is best to change it after driving 15,000 miles. Air filters prevent dust, dirt, and other environmental contaminants from making it into the engine. After a while, the filter becomes clogged and should be replaced.
The fuel filter eliminates dirt and rust particles from the fuel, preventing them from making it into the engine and wreaking havoc. The fuel filter has a service requirement of every 20,000 to 30,000 miles.
Brake pad replacement
Brake pads are the first components that usually wear down in the brake assembly. Unlike the brake rotors that can last up to 70,000 miles, the brake pads have a service requirement of 30,000 miles. The brake pads are consistently subjected to a lot of pressure, causing them to wear down faster than other components in the brake assembly.
The brake line and whole brake assembly should be inspected for wear indicators during the pad replacement. Worn brake components could impact the longevity and performance of the new pads.
Spark plug replacement
The spark plugs are fitted into the cylinder head of an internal-combustion engine and provide the spark needed to ignite the air-fuel mixture. The plugs have a replacement requirement of 60,000 miles. You may begin to notice sluggish acceleration, power loss, reduced fuel economy, engine misfires, and difficulty starting your car once they are due for replacement.
Electric Smart Car Service Requirement
In 2017, the company stopped selling gasoline models to focus solely on electric vehicles. Unlike conventional cars, electric cars require less maintenance. Since electric cars eliminate most mechanical components used in traditional vehicles, they don’t need tune-ups, fluid flush, engine or transmission servicing, spark plugs, or drive belts replacement.
Regardless, electric vehicles still have some routine maintenance requirements, including:
- The tires should be frequently inspected for wear signs and pressure checks. It should also be rotated every 7,500
- Check the charger modules, battery, and battery coolant
- Inspect the brakes, suspension system, and drive shafts for wear signs or damage.
